MITx: 3.091x Introduction to Solid State Chemistry

      Course Updates & News

      1. October 15

We are excited to announce that the first week is now released and can be accessed here. Note that you are graded only based on the Problem Sets and the exams. All other questions are for you to practice and to learn more chemistry.
We have also launched our custom-built interactive periodic table which can be accessed through the Periodic Table tab at the top of the page. Go ahead and check it out. When you work on the exercises and homework problems, please use the values from our periodic table to ensure that you get the right answer. The same goes for the values of the constants listed in the Table of physical constants available in the Course Handouts section of the Course Info tab.
      2. October 13

Flat World Knowledge is generously providing a free online-only version of Professor Cima’s personalized content for students enrolled in 3.091x, Introduction to Solid State Chemistry. The free version can be accessed through the Textbook tab at the top of the page. Note that while the full Table of Contents is present, some of the chapters and sections are empty since only the material relevant for this course is included.
Through this page created specifically for 3.091x, Flat World Knowledge is also providing students with three affordable products to purchase. For $19.95, you can access a fully functioning ebook experience (highlighting, note taking, etc.) and the study aids to support General Chemistry: Principles, Patterns, and Applications by Averill and Eldredge. For $34.95, you can get that same full ebook experience, plus downloadable formats of Prof. Cima’s personalized version (printable PDF and tablet versions). Finally, for $39.95 plus shipping and handling, Flat World Knowledge will send you a printed and bound black and white copy of Prof. Cima’s personalized version of General Chemistry. Note that all three products contain the same chapters and sections as the Textbook tab.
      3. October 9

I am pleased to welcome you on behalf of the entire course team to the first edX offering of 3.091x: Introduction to Solid State Chemistry. The next 13 weeks will be a learning experience that is just as rigorous as the on-campus MIT course. You will be watching the in-class lectures as short video segments as well as learning from additional screencasts made specifically for the online environment. We have also created new questions between video segments that help you check that you have understood the concepts in the videos. The homework problems are similar to those used here at MIT and will require you to master the material presented in the videos, handouts, and text.
Please take some time to familiarize yourself with the edX platform by completing the following steps. These steps will explain both the course expectations, and how to use the edX courseware.
On October 15 at 3 pm Eastern Standard Time, the first week of materials will go live and you can also start working on the first set of homework problems. You will notice that many of the videos were produced during the live lecture at MIT. This means that students may pass in view of the camera from time-to-time.
We expect that you will have questions. Please use the discussion forum to ask any questions you have related to the course and also to report any bugs or system issues you might have.
We are looking forward to an exciting and productive course. Thank you for joining us on this journey.

      Dear Fernando Noveno,

Welcome to the launch of 3.091x, which begins today! To get started, visit

      https://www.edx.org/courses/MITx/3.091x/2012_Fall/info

where all of this week’s materials are now live. The learning sequences will cover "Why Solid-State Chemistry?", "Modern Chemical Concepts and Periodicity of the Elements", and "The Electron and Light." You can also take a look at our custom-built interactive periodic table and explore the Additional Study Materials in Week 1 that can help you deepen your knowledge.

Your first homework is also released today. It will cover the material from Week 1 and is due on October 28 at midnight in your local timezone. We encourage you to use the discussion forum links under the individual problems to discuss solution strategies. Just remember to follow the Collaboration Guidelines and avoid posting full solutions.

We are pleased to announce that Flat World Knowledge is generously providing a free online-only version of Professor Cima’s personalized content for students enrolled in 3.091x, Introduction to Solid State Chemistry. The free version can be accessed through the Textbook tab on the course website. In addition, Flat World Knowledge is providing students with three affordable products to purchase: ebook with study aids, downloadable formats, or a printed and bound copy. For details, see here or see the course info page.

We hope you enjoy your first week of class. Those of you with some chemistry training will find the first part of 3.091x to be familiar. Most of the material after that is unconventional for a university chemistry course. The exception is at MIT, where it has satisfied the chemistry requirement for over 40 years!

My background includes a degree in chemistry and a PhD in chemical engineering, both from UC Berkeley. I have taught at MIT for 26 years in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. My research areas are quite diverse and have included electronic materials, high temperature materials, superconductors, and medical products. I am author or coauthor of over 200 publications. I am an inventor with over 50 patents some of which concern MIT's 3D Printing process. I've been enchanted with the 3.091 since sitting through Prof. Gus Witt's lecture 25 years ago. I feel very fortunate to be lecturer in charge for this world-wide course. I look forward to working with you!

Michael and the 3.091x Course Team
